Warren Wilson College Team Update
The season is drawing to a close and the team is more composed than ever. The usual drop out has occurred, but there is strong leadership in place and a strong work ethic to carry the load.
The North Carolina Section is going to have their hands full with WWC this year!!
Just last weekend the team won their first tournament!! Here is a message from the capt:
Warren-Wilson College Men's team went to the Blue Ridge Thawout this weekend and took home the championship. Saturday was a beautiful day in the valley and when the rain finally stopped we were greeted by dense fog and a very unique environment for ultimate. Every player that attended (asher, kyle, graham, greg, mcfly, linden, matt, jamie, alex, alec, aaron and of course chris larson) played very very well and each individual came up with some very important plays and the right time.
Scores are as follow (to the best of my memory)
Saturday involved some serious domination with losing teams being:
JMU-B
Virginia Tech-B
ETSU
UNCASunday we saw some more competition with one more pool play game in the morning and then the ch
WWC - 13 and NCSU-B - 2
Q: WWC- 13 and Marble City 11
S: WWC- 13 and ETSU 4
F: WWC- 15 and Boone Alumni 11Hell of a job gentlemen, way to stick together and win!
Graham said it best when he said we played exciting huck ultimate when we could and when we needed to bring it down a notch and play some boring short pass ultimate we did that too. Lets keep the intensity for two more weeks, we can do it!
Hope the entire club had a nice weekend and I look forward to seeing you out there on Tuesday!

General Demographics of Ultimate in the USA
First a little about Ultimate from the Ultimate Players Association website:
Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of Ultimate is played by two seven-player squads with a high-tech plastic disc on a field similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Ultimate is governed by Spirit of the Game™, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. Ultimate is played in more than 42 countries by hundreds of thousands of men and women, girls and boys.
UPA Board of Directors Definition of the Sport of Ultimate
"What is Ultimate?" as defined by the UPA Board of Directors? The UPA umbrella is broad but does not cover every disc-related sport. The UPA Board of Directors believes that one key factor that defines Ultimate is that the players need to be the ones in control, even if it's a professional league, even if there are referees, even if it's played on sand with 4 players to a team. The definition developed by the Board at the 2001 Strategic Planning Meeting is as follows:
"Player defined and controlled non-contact team sport played with a flying disc on a playing surface with end zones in which all actions are governed by the 'Spirit of the Game™.'"
From the UPA's Ultimate Revolution blogsite:
•Overall membership has seen a 62% increase over the past 5 years.
•Since 2003, the number of women’s teams competing in the College Series has increased by 65%
•In 2002, there were 7,720 college members. Today there are almost 12,000.
•Youth membership has exploded: 342 in 2001; 4500 today!
•Since the inception of the UPA Coaching Clinic program, approximately 600 individuals have attended clinics in order to share Ultimate in their local communities.
•The College Championships have been on TV for the past 3 years thanks to a UPA partnership with CSTV.
•Ultimate became a medal sport in the 2005 World games – the first time Ultimate has been included on the program of an international multi-sport event.
